I’m not proud to be an American; I’m lucky to be one, but not proud. There is very little most of us have done recently to take pride in the once great nation our fore mothers and fore fathers fought for. I thought about this on the evening of July fourth, the celebrated day our nation claimed independence from a tyrannical ruling party. While we all celebrated and watched fireworks my mind wandered in thought on those early patriots. If they saw what had become of the country they would surely shoot their children to spare them the slow disgrace now known as these United States.
The early settlers held a vision to escape European rule and venture to new land where they could live free from religious persecution. Our nation continues to battle its own with words of hate and condemning actions thrust on those who won’t adhere to the scripture of a particular God. This isn’t religious freedom, it’s tribal hysteria.
Our early ancestors would not tolerate unrepresented taxation from the ruling overlords and believed in a system based on democratic vote. We now find corporations deemed as individuals and these power broking behemoths now guide the path our laws seem to take.
Our military was meant to protect our borders from foreign intrusion yet all I read are stories of our sons, daughters, wives and husbands, mothers and fathers being shipped off to places a lot of people couldn’t point out to you on a map. They become maimed or killed not for the sake of a freer America, but for the ego of some clandestine pack of policy makers.
Our votes have become regulated and predictable as we are given the choice to be ruled by an ass or a ferret. Companies purchase the right to use us as test animals….rub the stuff in the bunny’s eye and see if it reacts. The only ones held accountable for their actions are those who cannot afford decent legal representation. What a sin this nation has become.
I boarded the bus this afternoon with a young Armenian man who recently came to this country. He expressed a somewhat disappointed view of America but figured he’d stick it out – at least until he can get to Canada. I told him I might join him on a venture to the Great White North…and that’s a sad thing to admit. I want to have pride in this country but unless we all step up and work to make this a land by the people and for the people, why would I press false patriotism toward an America hellbent on destroying its children?
Next July Fourth I hope we all truly have something to celebrate about. Let’s work to patch this country again, set aside the petty problems and focus on the scary large ones….because if we can’t stop the oppression, we should probably just light a lot more fireworks…..a LOT more fireworks.
…..welcome to the Church.
