Tea Bagging an Elephant

Kristen Wyatt reporting for the Associated Press denotes an increase in support for Mitt Romney from a sluggish Tea Party audience. The race is all but over for the  group of Republican candidates fighting to dethrone the Mormon frontrunner. Gingrich, Santorum and Paul struggle to gain momentum and any last minute support from potential swing voters and befuddled conservative tribes. Is this alleged new found support from tea party members due to his winning personality or their exhausted effort giving up on finding a suitable opponent to face the Man in the House?

Santorum and Paul both bypassed Nevada on the campaign trail; time and money would prove to be too costly with no winning results from that state-too large a Mormon following. Santorum whisked himself off to the Colorado Western Slope to urge voters there to rekindle his campaign-a safe move to persuade the farmers and mountain folk rather than jumping over to the Eastern slope where a more bitter diatribe could rattle his cage. Denver and Boulder would scare the man. We have monsters out here that would eat him alive and give his wife venereal disease. We have marijuana clinics next door to our Starbucks…how could he fathom that?

I have no idea why the fuck Ron Paul is planning three events in Minnesota and skipping two states. I assume a lot of it boils down to campaign funding. Both Romney and Gingrich-especially Romney-have enough scratch available to have any of the minor candidates wiped out by planting a dead hooker in their room or Photoshopping some documentation that questions their U.S. citizenship. They won’t go down that road because it gets too dangerous and could come back to haunt them at a critical juncture in the election. The question still bugs me; why Minnesota? I can only guess that Ron Paul feels he can draw appeal from a state that elected an ex-WWF wrestler as their Governor. His supporters generally fall outside the box and he, like so many jaded politicians, believe if you get a swell of support in one state it will carry over to more and more. Maybe so. Who can say?

So as the gameboard stands (at this moment) it appears to be a Romney/Obama race with fanfare fading away from the likes of the other candidates. That leaves a new set of political battles to look at; will the tea party give enough support to Romney to take him into the White House or will they falter at the polls? Who will rise up as the Vice Presidential running mate (qualifications for that position won’t matter as much as public appeal….case in point, Sarah Palin)? What new skullduggery will take place to deflower the Great Hope and Change of Barack Obama? Just because Newt may not win the nomination, don’t count him (or any of the fallen candidates) out. He’ll bring a huge pot of mud to sling at the Democrats and it will be a no holds barred slander-fest if he wants it to be. One you’re out of the running you can throw any accusatory statement out there you want and Gingrich has that certain slime appeal to really work it. Donald Trump tried but his heart just wasn’t in it like Newt’s callous demeanor. Bring on the mud Newt, bring it on.
